Montage Park is a thoughtfully designed neighborhood park located within the Millenia master-planned community in Chula Vista, California. Conceived as an “urban oasis,” the 1.62-acre park provides residents with a welcoming retreat from the surrounding residential and commercial development, offering a space that supports relaxation, social interaction, and active community life both day and night.

Developed in close collaboration with the City of Chula Vista and guided by extensive community engagement, the project reflects a shared vision: to create a vibrant, inclusive public space that enhances quality of life while strengthening the identity of the Millenia neighborhood.

Design Vision & Community Integration

From the outset, Montage Park was envisioned as more than a traditional pocket park. The landscape design weaves together a network of pedestrian pathways, social gathering areas, and landscaped zones that encourage movement, connection, and pause. The park also forms a key link within a broader urban trail system that ultimately connects six parks throughout Millenia, reinforcing walkability and neighborhood connectivity.

Community input played a central role in shaping the park’s layout and amenities. Residents expressed a desire for spaces that feel calm yet engaging, safe yet visually distinctive. The resulting design balances open sightlines with intimate garden moments, creating a park that feels accessible and inviting to users of all ages.

Landscape & Spatial Experience

The park is organized into a series of complementary zones, each contributing to a layered spatial experience. A welcoming entrance and illuminated signage establish a strong sense of arrival, while gently curving pathways guide visitors through the site. Embedded glass-seeded ribbon patterns within the paving subtly reference the regional trail system and reinforce the park’s role as a connective landscape element.

At the heart of Montage Park is a central plaza designed for social activity and informal gatherings. Shade sails provide daytime comfort while also becoming sculptural focal points within the landscape. Seating areas, picnic tables, and benches are thoughtfully distributed to create smaller moments of rest and interaction throughout the park.

Planting design further enhances the sense of place. A grove of Swan Hill fruitless olive trees anchors one of the primary garden spaces, evoking Southern California’s agricultural heritage. Surrounding plant selections, including drought-tolerant grasses, shrubs, and native species,  provide texture, seasonal interest, and long-term sustainability.

Lighting Design & Groupe Ragni North America’s Contribution

Lighting plays a defining role in the transformation of Montage Park after sunset. The lighting strategy was carefully developed to enhance safety and visibility while preserving the tranquil character of the landscape.

Groupe Ragni North America supplied LAMPION GLOW luminaires, selected for their warm, ambient light output and refined aesthetic. These fixtures are used to illuminate pedestrian pathways and gathering areas, providing consistent, glare-controlled illumination that supports safe nighttime use without overpowering the natural surroundings.

The luminaires integrate seamlessly with the park’s architectural language, complementing the clean lines of nearby buildings while remaining visually subtle within the landscape. Their performance and durability support the City’s long-term maintenance goals, while their soft illumination contributes to a welcoming, human-scaled nighttime environment.

Additional lighting elements, including in-grade accent lighting, catenary lighting over the plaza, and discreet step lights, work in harmony with the LAMPION GLOW fixtures to create visual hierarchy and depth. Together, these layers of light guide movement, highlight landscape features, and establish a comfortable atmosphere that encourages evening use.

Sustainability & Long-Term Value

Sustainability is embedded throughout the project. Energy-efficient LED lighting reduces power consumption while supporting Dark Sky principles. The drought-tolerant planting palette minimizes water use and reflects the regional climate, while durable materials and fixtures ensure longevity and reduced maintenance requirements.

By extending the usability of the park into the evening hours, the lighting design maximizes the value of the space for the community, encouraging ongoing engagement and fostering a sense of safety and belonging.

Montage Park exemplifies how thoughtful collaboration between landscape architecture and lighting design can transform an urban site into a meaningful community destination. Through its integration of inviting landscapes, carefully considered lighting, and community-driven design, the park succeeds as both a functional public space and a distinctive neighborhood landmark.

Groupe Ragni North America’s contribution to the project reinforces the importance of high-quality, human-focused lighting in shaping memorable outdoor environments, helping Montage Park truly live up to its vision as an urban oasis.
