Located in the heart of historic downtown Brighton, Colorado, Founders Plaza serves as a vibrant gathering space for residents and visitors alike. Phase II of the project transformed a compact quarter-acre site into a dynamic urban oasis, providing a family-friendly Activity Area, open multi-use spaces, and thoughtfully designed seating. The project aimed to extend the success of Phase I while creating a seamless, visually cohesive space that enhances the character and identity of downtown Brighton.

Groupe Ragni North America contributed its Nations/Unia poles and DecoLED Spike & Sphere luminaires to elevate both the functionality and aesthetic appeal of the plaza. The lighting design was intended not only to ensure safety and accessibility but also to create an inviting and memorable nighttime environment, emphasizing the beauty of the landscape and architectural elements.

Design Vision

Despite the plaza’s modest size, the design balances flexibility, comfort, and visual richness. Central to the vision were multi-use open areas and gathering zones that encourage social interaction, while cut stone slab benches, cast-in-place concrete seat walls, and trellis-shaded areas provide shaded retreats and opportunities for pause. Custom decorative metal screens, pavers, and concrete finishes add texture and character, connecting the new Phase II seamlessly with the existing Phase I.

The landscape design further enhances the plaza’s urban experience, integrating boulders, new planting, and irrigation systems that bring greenery and natural beauty into the heart of downtown. Every element was carefully coordinated with the City of Brighton and the project consultants to ensure a unified, high-quality result that celebrates the historic context while meeting contemporary needs.

Lighting Design & Impact

Lighting played a pivotal role in bringing Founders Plaza to life, particularly after sunset. Groupe Ragni North America’s luminaires were chosen for their ability to combine elegance, durability, and flexibility. Nations/Unia poles provide architectural cohesion along pathways and open areas, while DecoLED Spike and Sphere fixtures accentuate seating areas, trellises, and landscape features.

The lighting strategy creates a layered, welcoming environment that guides pedestrian movement, highlights key design elements, and fosters a sense of safety without overpowering the plaza’s natural and built features. In this way, the plaza becomes a true day-to-night destination, supporting community engagement and family activity at all hours.

Phase II of Founders Plaza exemplifies how small urban spaces can have an outsized impact on a community.
