Project Spotlight: Denver Zoo Habitat Lighting

Location: Denver, Colorado
Ragni Products: Karina with Custom Arm and Square Pole
Project Type: Exhibit Lighting for Australian and Big Cats Habitats

The Denver Zoo continues to evolve with its expansive “Into the Great Wild Open” renovation initiative, designed to deliver immersive, engaging habitats that reflect the natural environments of animal residents and inspire guest discovery. As part of this transformation, new lighting was needed for the Australian exhibit and big cats habitats to enhance guest experience and support the care and wellbeing of the animals.

Lighting That Inspires Exploration

Groupe Ragni North America was selected to provide exterior lighting for key areas of these newly developed habitats. Our Karina luminaires with custom arms and square poles were chosen to deliver performance and aesthetic cohesion that supports both functional illumination and the zoo’s design vision.

The Karina fixtures provide reliable, high quality lighting that enhances visibility along pathways and in exhibit viewing zones. Custom arms were integrated to ensure lighting met specific site conditions and visual goals, while square poles offer architectural presence that complements the surrounding landscape and exhibit design.

This lighting approach improves wayfinding and user comfort for visitors as they explore the Australian habitats and big cats areas during later hours, while remaining considerate of the animals and their environments.

Supporting a Larger Vision

The Australian exhibit and big cats habitats are part of the Denver Zoo’s larger “Into the Great Wild Open” campaign, a multi-phase effort that reimagines the zoo experience with enlarged animal spaces, naturalistic landscapes, and thoughtful guest circulation. As these areas opened to the public, lighting played a key role in enhancing safety and activating the spaces after dusk.

Groupe Ragni North America worked with the project team to ensure lighting supported the zoo’s goals for sustainability, animal welfare, and visitor engagement. The result is a lighting installation that balances performance with sensitivity to context, contributing to a welcoming atmosphere for guests without disrupting the habitats.

Enhancing Visitor Experience

With the installation complete, pathways and exhibit areas now benefit from lighting that improves visibility and comfort for guests exploring the zoo into the evening hours. The use of Karina fixtures with custom arms and square poles establishes a unified lighting language across these spaces, reinforcing the zoo’s narrative of exploration and connection with wildlife.

Groupe Ragni North America’s contribution to the Denver Zoo habitat projects highlights how intentional lighting design supports both functional needs and memorable guest experiences in dynamic public environments.
